Crofton Park 7 - Burgess United 3

After two back to back Cup wins, Crofton Park returned to league action & hosted last season’s runners up Burgess United. Both teams had scores to settle from last season & the conditions were not ideal for either team to play fluent football. Tackles were flying in & tempers were flared as soon as the match kicked off. Mus Mehmet started very brightly & was cutting out every ball that Burgess put forward. The lead was taken very early on when brothers Cem and Can Ürmen linked down the right & a cross from Can was blocked for a corner. A sweet delivery from Serhan Mehmet was met by brother Serkan with a powerful header past the keeper.

Burgess didn't expect such a quick start from the home side & it was soon 2-0 when some swift play from Serhan & Richard Onyejiuwa was moved around the Burgess midfield & Serhan’s through ball saw Richard side step the defender & slot past the keeper. The away side were stunned!

Crofton were strong at the back with all four defenders communicating well & Burgess were finding it hard to break them down. However they began to slowly start passing it around. Their left back played it in to their centre forward who clearly pushed Cem in the back when jumping for the header & then went on to shoot & make it 2-1. The referee claimed not to have seen the push & Crofton were livid.

Mus was having an impressive performance in the centre of the park, linking well with the defence & attack. He lofted a lovely ball over the top to Suley Cambulat, who beat a defender only to be crumbled over in the box by another three. The ref once again waved play on! Crofton made it clear that they would not be outmuscled in this game. Some good passing along the backline released Cem who clipped a lovely ball over the top for Serkan. He pulled it out of the air, sending three defenders the wrong way & delightfully lobbed the keeper from outside the box on the volley to make it 3-1. His best goal so far this season.

On the stroke of half time, a one-two between Burgess’ front men allowed them to get behind the defence & make it 3-2. There were cries for offside but the goal stood.

The second half started just as explosive as the first. Burgess were rattled by Crofton’s confident approach to the game. Some good work by Mus saw him fouled in the middle of the park & he played a quick pass to Richard who chipped a delightful ball over the top which released Can. He was shoulder to shoulder with the defender but his pace carried him through & he powered a shot past the keeper with his first touch.

Suley made way for Chima Amechi on the hour mark. Burgess now reverted to a route one tactic. The centre back played a long ball up to the striker & on the turn he passed Deray Özgü & fired a low shot past keeper Zubie Hassan to make it 4-3. Were Burgess about to break Crofton hearts?

Polat Cambulat replaced Cem with 20mins to go & was immediately in the thick of things, blocking a shot on the edge of the box & making sure the strikers were kept at bay. A good one-two between Chima & Richard saw Chima fouled. Serhan took the resulting free kick & saw his 25 yard effort come back off the post. The ball fell to Can on the by-line who took one touch & smashed the ball from the tightest of angles to make it 5-3. An excellent finish.

A mazy run from Serhan down the middle saw him fouled yet again. He picked himself up & drove a low free kick into the bottom corner to extend Crofton’s lead.

The game was now well beyond Burgess & Crofton wanted more. Chima played a delightful 50yard pass across pitch to Serkan who skipped the defender & as he got to the by-line, chipped the ball over the keeper & defender where Richard was waiting to head in to an empty net, only to see his shot come back off the bar. Crofton couldn't believe it. Richard released Chima down the left who skipped past a defender & crossed low along the box between the keeper & defence where Serkan was waiting at the far post to slot home his third of the game.

Phil Van Dyke replaced Can for the remainder of the game. There was one final bit of drama when Zubie made a great save at full stretch as the ball was heading towards the top corner. He fell in agonising pain & saw that his finger was dislocated once the glove was removed! He couldn’t continue & Crofton had already used all their substitutes. Serkan stepped into goal & kept a clean sheet for the last 5mins.

London FA Sunday Junior Cup

Round 2

24/10/10

Crofton Park 5 - Highgate Albion 1

The visitors to Catford Pitz for round 2 of the LFA Sunday Junior Cup were Highgate Albion of the Hendon & District League, an unknown team to Crofton Park who looked like strong opposition if previous seasons results were anything to go by.

The game started slow with Highgate knocking the ball around very well & forcing their opponents to chase early on. The away side thought they had broken the deadlock when a through ball to their striker left him one on one with keeper Zubie Hassan & he slotted home, only to find the offside flag up. Mus Mehmet & Richard Onyejiuwa were working well in the middle & the Highgate players were struggling to get past them. As the game progressed, Crofton began to find their rhythm. Serhan Mehmet & Can Ürmen were starting to threaten down the left & right wing & were putting numerous crosses into the box. A Highgate corner was cleared by captain Deray Özgü. Serkan Mehmet took the ball down the right wing & fed Richard through who took one touch & smashed a low shot under the keeper. The keeper should have done better, but nonetheless it was a great strike.

Highgate were not producing any chances despite all of their neat passing & the Crofton defence were as solid as they have been all season. The goal lifted Crofton who were now starting to create chances. Suley Cambulat & Serkan had a shot each saved by the keeper just before the break.

Crofton started the second half well & were happy to let Highgate knock the ball about. Eventually every ball forward was sent long & high into Crofton's area but Selçuk Devecioglu was there to meet every single one. They did break through however when the centre forward ran across Cem Ürmen & fell to the ground quite easily. The referee awarded a penalty to the shock of all Crofton players. Up stepped the centre back to make it 1-1.

Crofton kept their heads up & began to attack in numbers. A through ball from Mus to Serkan saw his shot saved by the keeper & out for a corner. Serkan floated the ball in & it was met by the head of Deray but it went just over the bar. Some good work down the right again saw Serkan & Can link up. A cross from Serkan was blocked by the defender but his second attempt was met with a looping header from brother Serhan which sent the ball over the keeper into the back of the net to make it 2-1. The celebrations which followed will long be remembered by Crofton players & fans!

Highgate had a chance to equalise when a delightfully hit shot was heading for the top corner only for Zubie to tip it over the bar at full stretch. A remarkable save. It was all Crofton now & Richard was fouled down the left after a good pass from Az Azmi. Serhan floated the free kick to the far post & Serkan headed past the keeper to make it 3-1. That was 2 goals in quick succession.

Polat Cambulat then replaced Richard who went off with a slight ankle strain. Highgate seemed demoralised & knew they had an uphill struggle on their hands. It was all route one for them & it wasn't long before Crofton found their fourth. Selçuk ran the ball out of defence, skipped past four challenges & hit a defence splitting pass into the path of Can, whose pace took him past the defender before poking the ball past the onrushing keeper with one touch.

With Crofton now comfortable, Phil Van Dyke & Damien Sexton replaced brothers Can & Cem. The Red & Black Army wanted more & were rewarded with a fifth when an unmarked Serkan slotted home after a good run & cross from Suley.

So Crofton Park progress to round 3 after an impressive & hard fought win where they will face the winners of the Puma 2000 - Dee Em Tee tie.

Round 1

10/10/10

Crofton Park 4 - Newbridge 2

Crofton Park hosted Senior One side Newbridge in today's first round match in the Mary Wiltshire Shield.

The game began very physical & both sets of players were putting themselves about. The deadlock was broken early on when a mix up between Selçuk Devecioglu & Zubie Hassan allowed Newbridge's left winger to nip behind & chip the ball in.

Crofton Park were pushing forward & their first real chance came when Cem Ürmen passed to brother Can who released Serkan Mehmet down the right wing. He skipped past the left back & crossed onto Chima Amechi's head, who couldn't find the direction it needed. Newbridge's lead didn't last long as Serhan Mehmet went on one of his trademark mazy runs & was fouled in the box. The penalty was awarded. Up stepped Serkan who shot low to the right but it was saved & pushed away by the keeper. Captain Deray Özgü followed the ball & his determination saw him find Richard Onyejiuwa with a cross at the second attempt who nodded home to equalise.

Newbridge almost took the lead again when a swerving strike from outside the box was heading for the top corner only for Zubie to dive full stretch to his right & tip it round the post. Crofton began to take control of the game & were pressing even more. Chances from Serkan, Chima, Richard & Mus Mehmet all went close. A cross from Can was headed away only as far as Richard, who chested the ball down & unleashed a ferocious 25 yard volley into the top corner to put Crofton 2-1 ahead & send players & fans wild!

Last week's absentee Mus was sitting in front of the back four & cutting out Newbridge's attack. He played a defence splitting ball through to Serkan who curled it round the keeper with the outside of his boot to make it 3-1.

The second half started as fiery as the first & crunching tackles from Selçuk, Chima & Richard were starting to get underneath the Newbridge players. Newbridge did pull one back early on when a corner from the right was swung in & their centre back tapped home. Crofton were unlucky not to fully clear the ball & Zubie was also appealing for an obstruction but the referee disagreed.

Suley Cambulat made his debut for the club when he replaced Chima on 60mins. Newbridge were starting to tire & Crofton had the chance to all but tie the game up when Suley chested down a pass inside the box & was hacked down by the opposition defender. Up stepped Serkan only to see his second penalty of the game saved in exactly the same way as the first. Crofton were still pressing & a lovely chip over the top from Can to Serkan was neatly brought down but Serkan went for power rather than precision & shot over the bar. Serkan was then replaced for long term injury victim Polat Cambulat who was playing his first game in over a month. He sat in front of the defence with Mus to try & protect the lead. A third penalty was awarded to Crofton when Suley was brought down by the keeper as he was through on goal. He was lucky to escape with a yellow card. This time Suley stepped up to take the kick & sent the keeper the wrong way only to see his shot skim the post & go wide. So unbelievably, that was three missed penalties for Crofton & missed chances to kill the game off. Polat could have wrapped the game up with 10mins to go & couldn't believe his luck as he was through on goal with only the keeper to beat & tried to square pass to brother Suley, who was not up as high as Polat thought & another chance was squandered. Richard made a powerful run forward, dancing in & out of the defenders & was brought down inside the box for the fourth penalty of the game! No mistake was made this time as Serhan stepped up & coolly slotted past the keeper with just over 5mins to go. Phil Van Dyke then replaced Can & Crofton comfortably played out the remainder of the game to advance to round two.

Crofton Park 4 - Docklands Athletic 5

This promised to be an exciting encounter as Crofton Park hosted league leaders Docklands Athletic.

Both sides threatened early on & Crofton took the lead inside 10mins when a through ball from Serhan Mehmet to brother Serkan was missed by the defender & Serkan coolly rounded the keeper to make it 1-0.
Docklands were thrown a lifeline when a shot from outside the area hit Selçuk Devecioglu's arm. The referee awarded a penalty although it seemed that it was more ball to hand than a deliberate hand ball. Up stepped the Docklands striker but he stroked the ball wide. Goalkeeper Zubie Hassan still had it covered. Docklands did however pull level shortly after. A corner was swung in which everybody missed. Zubie got a hand to it but the ball was creeping in. Az Azmi attempted to clear it off the line but the goal was awarded.
This was a wake-up call for Crofton & they soon got back into their rhythm. Serhan had been moved into the middle of the park to cover the injured Mus Mehmet & was linking up well with Can Ürmen down the right. A neat exchange between the two released Serkan who was fouled on the edge of the box. A great delivery from Serhan was perfectly met by Richard with a powerful header into the far corner to make it 2-1.

Crofton grew in confidence & started taking control of the game. New signing Suley Cambulat was easing into the game & linking well with Chima Amechi. Chima's work rate was once again second to none & a powerful tackle on the Dockland's right back proved to be vital as he won the ball, skipped passed the second defender & delivered an inch perfect cross with the outside of his boot into the path of Serkan whose first time flick over the keeper made it 3-1. This was now Crofton's game to lose.

Docklands refused to give up & when a tussle in the corner with Azmi & their right winger resulted in a foul, the referee awarded a penalty even though the linesman awarded a free kick in favour of Crofton! Up stepped the Docklands' midfielder to tuck home & make it 3-2.

As the half moved on Crofton were still pressing & a stinging volley from Chima was blocked. Chances from Richard & Serhan also came to nothing. 5mins from half time Docklands were level. A corner from the left hand side was well met by the unmarked Docklands midfielder & the score was now level.

Crofton came out stronger in the second half & a good ball from Cem Ürmen to Serkan was bent into the box only for Chima to just miss it. A good chance went begging. The fourth goal eventually came when another beautifully delivered free kick from Serhan was met by Serkan at the far post to head past the keeper. This was Serkan's third hat-trick of the season already!

Docklands refused to give up & began to push forward after being kept quiet for most of the half. The young side hit Crofton with a quick counter attack after defending a corner. The ball was worked down the left & passed into the box at the far post where the ball was tapped in. Crofton waited for an offside decision but it never came. Once again the lead was lost.

With just under 10mins remaining, a free kick from the right was again missed by all Crofton players & Docklands headed in at the far post to take the lead for the first time in the game. Crofton pressed for the equaliser but it never came. A free kick from Serkan was well saved & shot from Richard went slightly wide.

Crofton Park 2 - Inter Shamrock 1

Crofton Park played host to one of last season's closest rivals, Inter Shamrock, on a rain soaked afternoon.

The game started sluggish with no team really able to get their foot on the ball & take control. The first chance fell to Crofton when a corner from Serkan Mehmet was met by Chima Amechi at the far post, only for his volley to go wide. Crofton were almost caught out when a free kick from Inter Shamrock was well saved by Zubie Hassan. The rebound forced an equally impressive save as Zubie tipped the ball over the bar. Selçuk Devecioglu was once again a commanding presence at centre back, forming a formidable partnership with captain Deray Özgü.

The deadlock was broken when a long kick up field from Zubie went over the onrushing goalkeeper & the Shamrock defender blatantly pulled back Serkan as he chased the ball. The referee rightly awarded a penalty. Up stepped in-form Serkan to put his side 1-0 up & score his tenth of the season.
The goal lifted Crofton & they began to take control of the game. As they pushed for a second goal, an Inter Shamrock corner was cleared by Serkan to Cem Ürmen which resulted in a quick counter attack. Cem squared to Richard Onyejiuwa who burst through Midfield. Cem continued his run on the right, however Richard opted to pass to Chima whose shot was saved. Crofton couldn't find that all important second goal despite some good link-up play between Az Azmi & Serhan Mehmet down the left.

Crofton started the second half the way they ended the first. Mus Mehmet found Can Ürmen on the right with a good pass, who then beat two defenders & crossed in a dangerous ball which was cleared by the defence. A throw-on from the left was launched into the box by Serkan which beat all the defenders. Can rushed in to challenge & his faint touch directed the ball away from the keeper & found Chima at the back post who tapped in to make it 2-0.

The match soon turned into a fierce battle as some very late tackles were being made by both sides. Serkan was replaced by brother Devran on 65mins. Inter Shamrock were not the sort of team to go down without a fight & with around 10mins to go an unexpected shot from the edge of the area somehow beat Zubie to make it 2-1. Crofton changed their formation to 5-4-1 for the remainder of the game to try & protect the lead. However, this didn't prevent them from going forward still. A great ball from Mus found Dev one on one with the keeper, only for Dev to fire straight at him.

It was a nervy last few minutes but Crofton grouped together to grind out the deserved win.

House of Fun 0 - Crofton Park 8

On the back of a win against Bromley Sporting, Crofton Park faced a House of Fun side that were playing their first game of the season, albeit with 10 men.

Crofton started lively & within 5mins they opened the scoring. Can
Ürmen squared the ball to Serkan Mehmet who scored to make it 1-0. A confident Crofton were passing the ball around well & it was soon 2-0 after Serkan rounded the keeper. House of Fun were a shadow of last season's side & it didn't look like it would have made a difference had they had 11 men. They didn't really threaten & a new centre back partnership of Selçuk Devecioglu & Sami Ibrahim proved to work well.

Some good link up play between Az Azmi, Richard Onyejiuwa & Serhan Mehmet resulted in a swift 1-2 between Serhan & Richard. Richard's inch perfect pass found Serhan through on goal to score his 3rd goal of the season. Richard then put Serkan through who got the better of the defender & placed the ball into the top corner to make it 4-0 & complete an early hat-trick.

After a quiet start, Mus Mehmet began to stamp his authority on the game providing the link between attack & defence. His pass out wide to Can was then given to Serkan who played a low cross into the box for Chima Amechi who struck the ball first time to make it 5-0. Before the half ended, Serhan ended a good solo run with a low shot into the bottom corner to make it 6!

House of Fun were clearly demoralised but tried to pick themselves up at the start of the second half & began to pressure. If it weren't for Crofton's solid back line they may have grabbed a consolation goal or two. The Red & Black Army began to find their rhythm again & Richard went on a powerful run before unleashing a long range shot which was well saved by the opposition keeper. The resulting corner was taken by Serhan & was met deep at the far post by debutant Sami Ibrahim who headed low across the goal to make it 7-0. How many more would Crofton score?
Devran Mehmet replaced Can shortly after the break & Serkan was replaced by Phil Van Dyke 10mins later. Devran made an impact on the game straight away. After some good play from Azmi, he released Devran down the left who crossed into the box where the ball was met by Chima with a powerful & perfect header.

The game began to draw to a close & a dark cloud descended on the game when Chima was sent off for foul play. A late charge from House of Fun resulted in a harshly given penalty. The centre-back turned forward stepped up to take it but failed to convert as keeper Zubie Hassan saved low with his feet. The final whistle blew straight after.

Crofton Park 7 - Bromley Sporting 5

This was Crofton's first league game of the season & visiting Catford Pitz were new side & league leaders Bromley Sporting, who had won both of their games. Crofton took the lead early in the first half when a beautifully delivered free kick from Serhan Mehmet was met by Richard Onyejiuwa, whose header looped over the goalkeeper & into the net for his first goal for the club.
This was a chance for Crofton to build on their lead. However, a defensive mix up allowed Bromley Sporting to get behind the defence & score an all but lucky goal. At a goal a piece, this was proving to be a tough game for both sides. A deep cross from Bromley's left hand side was missed by everyone & another mix up by the home defence gifted Bromley their second goal to make it 1-2.
Crofton have shown in previous seasons that they are not a side to surrender when they fall behind. Captain Deray Özgü rallied his boys & they soon began to find their rhythm. A through ball from Can Ürmen to Serhan was blatantly handballed by the Bromley defender in the penalty area but the referee waved play on, only for Richard to be hacked down by the oncoming defender. This time the referee made no mistake & the penalty was awarded. Up stepped Serkan Mehmet who placed the ball into the bottom corner to make it 2-2. This lifted the home side.
After a run down the left wing, Serhan played the ball on to Serkan & his through pass met Chima Amechi's run who just couldn't find the touch to put it past the keeper. The Crofton defence slowly found their feet & stand in centre back & debutant Selçuk Devecioglu was a commanding presence throughout. Serhan went on another trademark run before passing to Chima, who put Serkan through to slot past the keeper & make it 3-2.
With 10mins to go until half time Crofton really stepped up the pressure. Az Azmi played the ball into Chima's feet, who played a swift one-two with Serkan before beating the keeper. Another debut goal for the club.

This was a great come-back from Crofton but they knew they had to keep up the pressure to seal the win against a strong side. Early in the second half, Richard burst through 2 defenders into the box. As he was about to pull the trigger he was hacked down to win another penalty. Serkan stepped up again & completed his hat-trick after sending the keeper the wrong way. The score was now 5-2 & surely game over.

Bromley had other ideas. Two changes were made which sprang the opposition back into life. A chip from the defender into the penalty box was chested down by the fresh striker who then swivelled & fired a volley past keeper Zubie Hassan to make it 5-3. The away side now felt they could grab something from this game. 5mins later, a Bromley free-kick was sent into the box. Two players were left totally unmarked & the ball was tapped in to make it 5-4 with 20mins still to play! Were Crofton about to lose a game they were so comfortably in control of?

The whole midfield were working extra hard now. A shot from Richard produced an excellent save from the Bromley keeper. As the resulting corner was taken, a push from the goalkeeper on Can resulted in a third penalty being awarded! Serkan stepped up to the plate yet again & kept his composure to make it 6-4. That was his fourth of the game & sixth for the season, in only 2 games!

Some good work down the left between Azmi, Serhan & Chima released Serhan into the box. He dragged the ball past 2 defenders & shot into the bottom corner from a tight angle for an excellent finish.

Bromley refused to give up. A shot from a corner was saved by Zubie but the loose ball wasn't followed up & was poked in to make it 7-5. Another very sloppy goal from a team who had the best defensive record last season. Chima had the chance to grab his second but a shot from the edge of the box went high above the goal.

This was a scrappy game but a strong hearted performance awarded Crofton with a win for their first league match of the season, something they have never accomplished before.

London FA Sunday Junior Cup

Round 1

12/09/10

Keepey Upeys 1 - Crofton Park 5

The first game of Champions Crofton Park's new season was in the 1st round of the LFA Sunday Junior Cup. The opponents were the unknown Keepey Upeys from the FA Accountancy League.

Crofton parked started the liveliest & threatened at every opportunity. Last season's top scorer Serkan Mehmet went close with a dipping free kick from 25 yards. Brother Serhan Mehmet was having fun on the left wing, beating the right back every time & getting the ball into the box. A glorious cross met new signing Richard Onyejiuwa at the far post & his volley went inches wide. The deadlock was broken when Serhan found Can Ürmen with a delightful through ball over the top of the defence. The Keepey Upey defenders were left flat footed & Can lobbed the ball over the on-rushing keeper to make it 1-0 to Crofton.
This sparked Crofton into life & they were attacking in numbers. Serhan won a tackle on the left & out-paced the right back before cutting inside 2 midfielders & drilling a low shot from 20 yards into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.
Crofton weren't done yet & when Az Azmi played an over the top through ball for Serkan he lobbed the goalkeeper to make it 3-0. This game was all but over as Keepey Upeys rarely threatened. Crofton's defence were on red alert making sure every high ball was met with a clearing header. New captain Deray Özgü kept the backline solid.

Keepey Upeys knew they had an enormous task on their hands in the second half & things looked hopeful when a soft decision by the referee went against Polat Cambulat in the area & a penalty was awarded. Despite diving the right way, keeper Zubie Hassan couldn't get a hand to the ball & the score was now 3-1. Crofton lost a little concentration for about 10mins after this but were soon back in control.

Another player making his debut was Chima Amechi who replaced the hard-working Can on the hour mark. This was a like for like replacement.
The fourth goal soon came when powerful midfielder Richard won the ball in the middle & played a through ball for Serkan who side stepped the defender & delightfully chipped the goalkeeper.

It could've been five when Richard once again fed the ball to Serkan whose angled shot smashed against the crossbar. Crofton were much more relaxed now & could afford to substitute Serhan on 75mins for another new player, Yoz Chouaou. The Red & Black Army grew in confidence & full backs Cem Ürmen & debutant Darren Spencer began to also attack. Cem, Azmi & Chima linked well down the right to embarrass the opposition left winger.
A free kick was won on the halfway line after a crunching tackle on Azmi. Deray floated the ball into the box which Polat directed into the top corner with a great header to make it 5-1. There could have been a couple more in the dying minutes when Chima's two crosses met Serkan & Richard who had both their shots blocked.

This was a great start for Crofton & they'll go into next week's league game full of confidence.
