Shooters Hill 2 - Crofton Park 6

Double Header

Match 1:

Crofton Park were keen to get themselves further up the table with their first game in 3weeks.

The long break did Crofton no favours as the home side were sluggish to start with. It was Crofton who had the majority of the running in the first half however & the break through came when a smart one-two between Serkan Mehmet & Koray Fuat found Erkan Senol on the left who scored his 10th goal of the season. Crofton were awarded a free kick about 40 yards out & as everyone was jogging forward Captain Az Azmi spotted the keeper off his line & tried an ambitious lob which the keeper only just got a hand to & tipped over. A great effort. The first half was shy of clear chances although Crofton were pressing for a second.

In the second half, Crofton stepped up their game & the team really pulled together. A 25 yard free kick from Atilla Yasar was saved by the keeper. Another good build up from the back through midfield found Serkan on the right. He crossed for Atilla to make it 2-0 & it seemed as if the Park would pick up the win for the first game.

Shooters Hill had other ideas & began to press. A good link up between two of their midfielders & a shot from outside the box beat goalkeeper Zubie Hassan on the bounce. With 2mins remaining, Shooters were awarded a free kick just outside the box. The ball was whipped in & after a goal mouth scramble, a shot cannoned back off the bar & was cleared for a throw on which then resulted in a corner. With 15 seconds on the clock remaining, the Shooters striker headed in his side's corner to make it 2-2 & send his team's players & fans wild.

Match 2:

Crofton were desperate to forget about the crazy last 5mins & two dropped points from the last game & notch the very much needed three points needed to stay in touch with the title.

Unexpectedly, Shooters took an early surprise lead when a mix up at the back allowed their striker through to score.

This was the kick up the backside Crofton needed & boy did it work! After a great attack through the midfield, Atilla's shot was parried round the post. Serkan scored direct from the resulting corner kick to make it 1-1. From the re-start, Crofton won back possession & Polat Cambulat chipped forward to Serkan, who chested & flicked through to Atilla to slot past the keeper. Fikret Sener filling in at right back was linking well with the midfield & he came forward with Atilla who crossed in to Serkan to delightfully lob the keeper. This made it 3-1 to Crofton in the space of 5 mins!

The second half was even more electrifying than the 1st. Mus Mehmet, Azmi, Cem Ürmen & Akay Mustafa were all now pushing forward. Devran Mehmet passed through to Serkan who carried it from just over the halfway line. He had support to his left & right but let fly from 30 yards & hit the top corner to complete his hat-trick! Definitely a contender for goal of the season. Crofton were now comfortable but they weren't about to let it slip. Fikret found Dev on the left wing who cut inside the defender. Players were flooding the box but Dev noticed a gap between the keeper & the post & he calmly finished from a tight angle. 5-1.

Shooters Hill were trying to keep their heads up but it was hard after so much pressure from the Red & Black Army. They did find a way through & found the net but it was only another consolation.

Azmi was fouled in the centre of the park & the vision & precision of Mus found Serkan with a quick free kick & he held off the defender to shoot high in to the net to score his fourth of the day & cap a man of the match performance.

This was the kind of display Crofton are used to. The club are now 10 points behind league leaders White Oak, with three games in hand.

Junior Cup

 Quarter Final

Crofton Park 2 - FC Lefke 0

Crofton Park hosted FC Lefke in their biggest game of the season so far, with a place in the semi final of the Junior Cup up for grabs. Both teams had a good number of supporters turn up & neither side wanted to disappoint.

The Red & Black Army made their intentions clear from the first whistle as they dominated proceedings early on. Some excellent football was being played & Crofton looked the more hungry side as they pressed Lefke with some neat passing. Serhan Mehmet was a constant threat as the opposition couldn't keep track of his mazy runs. Chances were few though as the opposition's defence proved stubborn. Lefke never really threatened in the first half & the Crofton back line looked pretty comfortable. The game had turned into a battle & some crunching tackles were made. The first half finished goalless but Crofton didn't panic as they had been in this situation before.

The second half began with a fast pace just the way the first did. The home side thought they had taken the lead when a beautifully struck free kick by Atilla Yasar appeared to be flying into the back of the net, only for the ball to smash into the crossbar. Crofton's confidence grew & they knew they were the stronger side. The deadlock was finally broken when a long clearance from keeper Zubie Hassan was flicked on by Atilla & Serkan Mehmet rose into the air to nod past the keeper & put his side 1-0 up. Crofton players & fans were ecstatic! It was clear that Lefke would now try & push forward more as they needed an equaliser & they almost came close when their striker hit the crossbar with an attempt. The home side didn't sit back however as they knew that a second goal would kill off the opposition. With about 15mins remaining, Can Ürmen replaced brother Cem as an ankle injury forced him off. Shortly after, with the clock ticking away, Serhan floated a ball into the penalty area which was met by Polat Cambulat who beat the oncoming defender to get a vital touch & put his side 2-0 up & win the game. What a perfect way to score his first goal for the club & cap a man of the match performance.

Crofton Park are now in the semi finals where they await their opponents. Due to a backlog of games, this is currently unclear. Looking at the fixtures, form suggests Inter Shamrock Reserves or White Oak Wanderers. But in the Cup you never know…

Credit must be given to everybody who played. Goalkeeper Zubie commanded his area & made his presence known. The defence were as solid as they've been all season. The midfield worked their socks off & battled hard & the strikers caused the opposition defence all sorts of problems.

Crofton Park 4 - SL All Stars 1

After many frustrating weeks of postponed matches, Crofton Park finally had a fixture for 2010 against SL All Stars. The two sides previously met in Round 1 of the Mary Wiltshire Shield, which Crofton comfortably won 7-0. However, the club knew that it wouldn't be so easy this time.

The first half proved quite a tight & close affair. Crofton hadn't played a game for 6weeks & for the first 20mins it showed as the players needed time to settle. Once everyone began to find their feet, the chances started coming. Atilla Yasar & Erkan Senol both came close with a couple of chances each, either going just wide or being saved by the keeper. Crofton survived a few scares themselves as the All Stars capitalised from a couple of loose balls not being cleared by the home defence.

Crofton knew they had to improve their performance for the 2nd half & that's exactly what they did. The breakthrough came shortly after the restart when a free kick was won on the edge of the All Stars' area. Serkan Mehmet stepped up to take the free kick & placed the ball round the wall & into the bottom right corner with great precision to put his side 1-0 up.

Just a few minutes later, the ball was lofted up field to player/manager Akay Mustafa who chested the ball, only to be pushed blatantly in the back by the opposition defender. The referee spotted the incident & immediately blew for a foul. Although the incident appeared to be inside the penalty area, the referee awarded a free kick rather than a penalty. Serhan Mehmet curled the ball into the box & Erkan was there to put his side 2-0 up with a great header. The opposition's heads began to drop & Crofton were hungry for more!

The third goal came courtesy of some hard work by captain Az Azmi. He received the ball on the left from fellow midfielder Mus Mehmet, passed one player & won a couple of crunching tackles to put striker Atilla Yasar clean through on goal where he coolly slotted into the back of the net. SL All Stars refused to give up & pulled one back straight from kick off. Their young midfielder ran straight through the Crofton guard & passed to captain & player/manager Arlun who held off the challenge of Deray Özgü to finish with a great shot from a very tight angle.

With 15mins to go, Cem Ürmen won the ball just inside his own half & put Serkan through with a neat pass. The linesman raised his flag & the referee blew for a debateable offside. Serkan continued to run towards the goal which the referee deemed time wasting. As a result, he was shown his second yellow card & was sent off! This didn't affect Crofton's play & it was still one way traffic. Atilla raced onto a ball in the opposition half, cut inside the defender & squared to Erkan who made it 4-1 with a thumping strike.

Crofton Park 6 - Honor Oak 1

On a rain soaked Sunday morning, Crofton Park hosted bottom of the league Honor Oak in a South East London derby.

Straight from the centre Serkan Mehmet tried an audacious shot which caught the Honor Oak keeper off guard but he managed to get a palm to it and tip it over the bar.

Crofton had the early chances & the opener came after Can Ürmen was fouled 25yards from goal after a strong run. Serhan Mehmet took the resulting free kick & curled it in over the wall to the keeper's right.

After numerous chances from Crofton Park it was soon 2-0. Can cut the ball back to Serkan, whose miss-hit shot come cross looped over the defence & fell to Erkan Senol who tapped home.

Honor Oak were trying to carve an opening, but with the solid defence they were restricted to long range efforts. Goalkeeper Zubie Hassan was firmly behind them & was rarely troubled apart from a couple which slipped from his grasp. As half time approached, player of the month Polat Cambulat hastily brought down the Honor Oak striker & a penalty was awarded. Kam stepped up to try & bring his side back into the game but Zubie pulled off a great save & Kam headered the rebound over the bar from just a yard out!

Stepping onto the pitch for the second half, Crofton knew they had to find a third goal to kill off the opposition's hopes of getting something from the game. Shortly after the restart, some good work down the right from Can, Az Azmi & Serhan resulted in a cross which was met by Erkan who arrived late to slam home his second & make it 3-0.

Crofton were hungry for more! Azmi played a lovely through ball to Serkan who sweetly chipped the onrushing keeper, only to see the ball come back off the post. Some great football was being played by the midfield & a through ball from Mus Mehmet found Serkan who dashed past the last defender to coolly slot home his 7th in 6 games. Serkan then chipped the ball over the defence to Azmi & his sublime lob on the volley over the keeper unluckily came off the post.

Honor Oak were starting to string some passes together & when a shot from the edge of the box was blocked by 2 goal hero Erkan, the referee awarded a penalty for handball. There was no mistake this time & the Honor Oak striker grabbed his side a consolation goal. Crofton responded immediately & a cross from Serhan found Erkan unmarked & he sealed his hat-trick.

Changes were made as Koray Fuat & Eral Çimen replaced Can & Erkan. With 10mins remaining, a pass from Serkan to Koray looked to be too far ahead of him. However, Koray gathered the ball, turned the defender & coolly slotted past the keeper from a very tight angle to score his 1st of the season & complete an excellent victory for Crofton Park.

The Red & Black Army have now won their last 5 games in all competitions & look to take their good form into the 2nd Round Mary Wiltshire Shield clash against FC Delavaran.

Round 1

25/10/09

Crofton Park 2 - New Eltham 0

After another weeks break, Crofton Park were playing host to New Eltham in the first round of the Junior Cup. It only took Crofton a few minutes to take the lead when Serhan Mehmet passed the ball to Serkan Mehmet inside the area, who spun the defender & slammed the ball into the bottom corner. Was another high scoring victory on the cards? The home side continued to dominate with some fine football being played on the ground. However, chances were few & far between. Can Ürmen worked well on the right surging forward with pace & power & linking up well with the two strikers. A couple of hopeless shots from New Eltham was as much danger as they posed & Crofton's defence handled the long ball game well.

Everyone on the pitch feared the worst in the second half when a high tackle from the opposition caught Serhan just above the knee. Luckily, there was no break or serious damage but for a couple of stud marks across the thigh. Serhan kept his head & battled on through the rest of the game.

Crofton searched for the all important killer goal & Serkan, Serhan, Azmi & Deray all came close. The goal finally arrived 5mins from time when Serhan ran through to coolly slot the ball past the keeper & cap off an outstanding performance.

Another all-round, solid, battling display takes Crofton Park through to Round 2.

Crofton Park 2 - Eltham Town 'D' 0

Off the back of a 7-0 win in the Mary Wiltshire Shield, Crofton Park were looking to take that form into the league as they hosted Eltham Town 'D', who were a new look side from last season.

The game started with Crofton having the earlier of the chances. Serkan Mehmet went close early on, but didn't show the fine finishing form of last season. Eltham Town were never really in the game & apart from a few long-range shots which went high & wide, never really threatened. Their best chance of the half fell to their midfielder when he struck a superb half-volley. Crofton keeper Zubie Hassan saw the ball late but pulled off an excellent save. The home side almost took the lead when Serhan Mehmet played a pass out to the left wing & as the ball bounced, Serkan cut inside the defender, noticed the keeper off his line & floated one in from 30yards only to see his effort come off the bar. 5mins later another ball over the Eltham Town defence saw Serkan & Az Azmi both chasing. Serkan's pace took him through & he lobbed the out rushing goalkeeper to make it 1-0!

Crofton started the second half the brightest although Eltham began to press more as the game went on. The away side were kept out however by the very impressive Crofton backline. Sponsors' player of the year Devran Mehmet replaced Erkan Senol on the left wing midway through the half to make his first appearance this season. Serkan, Serhan, Mus Mehmet & Atilla Yasar all went close as Crofton searched for that important second goal. With 10mins remaining, a superb through ball from Mus found its way over the opposition defence. Serkan went up to challenge the keeper & came out on top, headering into an empty net to make it 2-0 & game over. Eral Çimen made his debut for the club as he replaced Cem Ürmen for the last 5mins.

That is now three wins in the last three games for Crofton with clean sheets being kept in the last two.

Round 1

04/10/09

SL All Stars 0 - Crofton Park 7

Crofton Park were drawn against fellow Junior Division 1 side SL All Stars in the first round of the Mary Wiltshire Shield & were looking for a win to set them on the road to the final.

They came out of the blocks the quickest & were first to every ball. Striker Serkan Mehmet was amongst the thick of it & could have had a handful of goals in the opening 15mins! The first goal eventually came when Captain Az Azmi made a determined run down the win, battling his way through three defenders before slamming the ball into the roof of the net. On the stroke of half time, a cross from Akay Mustafa found the head of Erkan Senol who rattled the crossbar. The rebound dropped to Serkan Mehmet who's shot cannoned off the post & fell back in the path of Erkan who slammed home his second of the season. SL All Stars were never really in the game & apart from a few blocked efforts, never really troubled the strong Crofton defence.

The second half opened with Crofton coming out even stronger. A corner from Serkan was over hit & Serhan whipped the ball back into the area where Erkan was there to slot home & make it 3-0. The All Stars were being completely outplayed at this point. A free kick from the half way line was flicked on by Polat Cambulat & Serkan touched past the keeper to make it 4-0. With Crofton now looking comfortable, Erkan made way for striker Atilla Yasar who was returning from injury. A sweet move down the right involving Cem Ürmen, Azmi & Serhan saw the ball swiftly passed from defence to attack & Azmi picked out Atilla who slotted past the goalkeeper for his first of the season. The one-way traffic did not stop! Cem Ürmen was replaced by brother Can & he soon made an impact. A blocked cross from Can was looped into the box by Serhan & Serkan out rose two defenders to powerfully head home. Koray Fuat replaced Serkan with 5mins to go & almost immediately crossed for Atilla to slot home his second of the game & wrap up the 7-0 victory.

The red & black army look to have found their groove & will be confident in the next round where they will play former league rivals FC Delavaran. If Crofton continue to play like this throughout the season they will be unstoppable!

20/09/09

Burgess United 1 - Crofton Park 2

After the disappointing defeat on the opening day of the season & a weeks rest, Crofton Park knew they had to win to stand a chance of being contenders for the title.

It was one way traffic from the off & Crofton threatened early on. Serkan Mehmet appeared to perfectly time his run & receive a lofted ball from brother Serhan, who then lobbed the keeper from outside the area. Crofton thought they had taken the lead, only to have the goal disallowed for offside. A bad call from both the referee & linesman.

Burgess United then took the lead against the run of play when their winger, who was their best player, mishit his cross & the ball sailed into the top corner. Crofton were shocked but did not let their heads drop & were back in the game soon after. Cem Ürmen picked out Serkan on the right wing with a great pass, who skipped passed the opposition left back & delivered an inch-perfect ball to the far post which was headed in by Erkan Senol for his first of the season.

Crofton began the second half the way they ended the first & had Burgess chasing shadows. Serkan, Az Azmi & Serhan all came close to adding a second. With 20mins remaining, Crofton won a free kick in their own half after a horrible tackle on player/manager Akay Mustafa. This prompted Akay to make a change & Can Ürmen replaced Erkan. What a change this proved to be. Damien Sexton punted the ball long upfield & as the ball was dropping in front of the keeper, Can raced on & tapped home to score with his first touch of the game & put the red & black army in front!!!

The score should have been 3-1 when Serkan's shot was parried by the keeper into the path of Azmi who tucked it away. Another terrible decision by the linesman & referee ruled the goal out for offside. With the last kick of the game, Akay was clear through on goal with only the goalie to beat but scuffed his shot wide.

Lewsisham Islam Centre 4 - Crofton Park 1

A re-run of last year's cup final meant this fixture had game of the season written all over it. Early pressure from Crofton Park resulted in dominance for the first 20minutes. The break-through came after a lovely pass from Captain Az Azmi to last season's top goal scorer Serkan Mehmet, who dragged the ball back from two defenders & neatly placed his shot to the goal keepers' right from 25 yards.

The one way traffic continued, until LIC found themselves through on goal & were level. Five minutes before half time, a cross from the right wing & a mix up between goalkeeper & defence resulted in L.I.C. scoring their second in quick succession & turned the game in their favour.

The second half started the same as the first, with Crofton Park pushing for an equaliser. Brothers Serkan and Serhan Mehmet both came close but had their shots crucially blocked by the opposition defence. With Crofton Park pushing on, L.I.C. beat the offside trap to make it 3-1 & were gifted another 5mins from time.
